Boundary Objects

As a society we have sat on the precipice of total climate disaster for as long as I can remember in my 32 years.

Tasked with creating a boundary object and user enactment, this project explored dystopia, because what if we don't have as much time as we think...

The main research question:
How might climate change impact millennials’ future (2028) energy consumption behaviors in domestic environments?
Matt Cooper-Wright best details what exactly is a boundary object in design:

"A boundary object is a ‘thing’ that is both defined enough that several communities can recognize it as the same thing, yet flexible enough that each community can use it according to their own needs."

And as the name suggests, in research it can test the boundaries we as humans have socially.

So to design a boundary object, we had to find out what boundary we should push...

Inspiration

Our team struggled with settling on a topic, initially we explored a green compost bin and kitchen waste consumption.

But what boundary are we concerned with? How would that help us understand energy consumption?

One sleepless night while working on another project, I saw the picture to the right. Its from the British War Museum. I thought back to the study abroad trip where I first saw it.

I thought instantly: What if global warming was so bad, we have to follow procedures like that in London during World War II?

Masks and emergency alerts became our boundary objects.
